WHAT IS JAPA ?
Redundancy of any Mantra or Name of the Lord is known as Japa. Japa is a significant Anga of Yoga. It is an otherworldly nourishment for the ravenous soul. Japa is the pole in the hand of the visually impaired Sadhakas (competitors) to trudge making a course for Realization. Japa is the thinker's stone or heavenly mixture that makes one God-like. In this iron age, practice of Japa alone can give timeless Peace, Bliss and Immortality.
Japa is redundancy of the Mantra. Dhyana is reflection on the type of the Lord with His ascribes. There is reflection or Dhyana with (Japa-Sahita-Dhyana); there is contemplation or Dhyana without (Japa-Rahita-Dhyana). In the first place you should join Dhyana with Japa. As you advance the Japa drops without help from anyone else; reflection just remaining parts. It is a high level stage. You can then practice focus independently. You can do anything that you like best in this regard.

'Mananat-trayate iti Mantrah' - By the Manana (steady reasoning or memory) of which one is shielded or is let out of the round of births and passings, is Mantra. That is called Mantra by the contemplation (Manana) on which the Jiva or the singular soul achieves independence from wrongdoing, delight in paradise and last freedom, and by the guide of which it accomplishes in full the fourfold natural product (Chaturvarga), i.e., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
